Position Summary



The RN Flights applies the nursing process to alleviate human suffering and enhance quality of life by combining excellent medical care with appropriate and safe transportation. The RN Flights staff are self-managing individuals who extend hospital resources into the community, are committed to professional growth and participate in regional education.



Minimum Education Requirements




  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing

  • BSN Preferred



Minimum Experience Requirements




  • 5 years of recent critical care experience

  • Previous ICU experience preferred



License/Certifications




  • Current state RN license for applicable state of employment or current RN license from a participating state in National

  • Compact Licensure

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association

  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) upon hire or within six months of hire/transfer

  • Transport Provider Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) upon hire or within 12 months of hire/transfer

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) upon hire or within 12 months of hire/transfer

  • Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) upon hire or within two 2 years of hire/transfer

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass the annual review of driving record for safe vehicle operations.

  • Must maintain current on all certifications required by Commission for Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS)



Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an * )




  • Assesses patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records & clinical data. Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcome.*

  • Effectively performs a variety of therapeutic/diagnostic interventions including but not limited to IV’s, wound care, medication administration, catheterization, specimen collections orthopedic and minor surgical procedures.*

  • Plans and implements resuscitation, stabilization and transport of critically ill and injured patients according toPatient Care Guidelines. Provides airway management, optimizes perfusion, and relieves pain and/or stress within air or ground transport setting. Justifies variances from protocol when appropriate. *

  • Promotes, advocates and collaborates to protect the health, safety and rights of each patient. Promotes a safe environment essential to the health and well-being of all individuals with the air medical transport environment, including aircraft and ambulance safety and universal precautions and protocols. *

  • Implements patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and physician directions.*

  • Anticipates needs of provider, staff, patient and family.*

  • Delegates to non-RN personnel in accordance with State Board of Nursing and hospital policy.*

  • Manages resources and patient flow through matching nursing competencies with individualized patient’s and transport team’s needs.*

  • Professional role model for all staff demonstrating ethical/legal/professional nursing process.*

  • Effectively uses time, personnel, equipment and supplies to provide high quality, cost effective patient care.*

  • Uses standards of care, hospital policies/procedures and regulatory guidelines to guide practice.*

  • Functions effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care.*

  • Accountable for teamwork by providing guidance to new team members; may serve as a mentor/preceptor to staff as needed.*

  • Seeks out learning opportunities and continuing education.*

  • Participates in formal and informal education about clinical and operational subjects pertaining to Flight for Life Colorado and EMS, for participants within and outside the Centura system. *

  • Seeks experiences that reflect current practice in order to maintain skills and competence in clinical practice or role performance.*

  • Maintains professional records that provide evidence of competency and lifelong learning.*

  • Evaluates one’s own integrity and nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules and regulations. Takes action to achieve goals identified during the evaluation process.*

  • May be required to drive Flight for Life Colorado vehicles including ambulances and the Flight for Life Colorado Suburban, in support of our ground ambulance operations, relocating vehicles to cover for maintenance and other program needs.

  • Adapts to rapidly changing technology as evidenced by competency in technology and equipment used in the patient care setting.*

  • Participates in unit based quality improvement, evidence-based practice and research activities such as helping to identify clinical problems in practice, assisting in data collection and appropriately uses research findings in clinical practice.*

  • Demonstrates care coordination competencies.*

  • Develops and implements patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.*
