Position summary


The CNIO provides visionary clinical nursing leadership to advance Centura Health utilization of the clinical information systems consistent with the goals and objectives of clinical and strategic initiatives of the organization to support care coordination. The CNIO provides strategic leadership for a comprehensive nursing informatics program that spans the care continuum. The CNIO provides transformational leadership and guidance in the standardization and alignment of clinical systems throughout Centura Health entities, ambulatory care, post-acute care and affiliate organizations. The CNIO is accountable for design of the clinical systems, standardized workflows and operational processes, quality patient care realization, and integration of data outcome metrics that support clinical and financial decision making. Oversees clinical IT implementations to mitigate unintended consequences to patient safety. The role works in collaboration with the CIO and CMIO in the strategy, development and implementation of Information Technology to support the multidisciplinary care providers. The CNIO serves as a liaison for hospital senior leadership at the national and local levels. Reports to CNE directly and CIO indirectly and a dyad partnership with the CMIO.


education requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Clinical Informatics, Information Systems, Business or related field required

  • PhD or DNP preferred


work experience requirements


Requires 10 years experience in nursing with evidence of significant experience in informatics and implementations. Healthcare executive experience preferred. Thorough understanding of hospital, ambulatory and home health nursing operations, interdepartmental patient work flow and care coordination across the care continuum. Understanding of theoretical foundations of professional nursing and change management. Demonstrated ability to work with teams and facilitate teams to consensus. Demonstrated ability to manage complex initiatives from conception to successful implementation. Working knowledge of current and evolving patient care delivery models, hospital operations, human resources processes, healthcare finance, payment systems, patient safety, regulatory and continuum of care.




  • Colorado RN license

  • Certification – ANCC informatics and/or executive required within 6 months of hire

  • Certification in an Epic application preferred

  • Certified in project management preferred


Position duties (essential functions, INCLUDE % OF TIME)


VALUE - 70%

  • In partnership with CMIO, provides clinical leadership to ensure successful adoption of clinical information systems that result in sustainable system and clinical performance. 

  • Engages care providers including nurses, pharmacists, physicians, ancillary departments, and other multidisciplinary team members in the design, integration and standardization of the electronic health record across the continuum of care. 

  • Assist in developing clinical and business intelligence systems capable of reporting variables to evaluate patient outcomes, to support research, and operational improvement across the continuum of care.

  • Regularly evaluates the clinical performance of system quality, service, and cost across the continuum of care and oversees the process to makes improvements where appropriate.

  • Adapts existing programs to meet needs of changing clinical environment, and ensures congruence between information technology and clinical nursing practice.

  • Participates in the development of an annual operating and capital budget which supports the objectives of clinical informatics

  • Develops implementation strategies for new services, upgrades, and technology enhancements across the continuum of care

  • Develops policy related to professional practice and relevant statutes and regulations on community, regional and/or national levels.

  • Provides leadership to clinical teams

  • Works cohesively with CIO and CMIO as part of a clinical information team in the development of systems and procedures affecting multiple sites within the organization as well as affiliate and joint venture organizations

  • Collaborates with Centura CCO, CNE and CMIO, and serves on appropriate councils and task forces to insure coordination in systems planning, development, and maintenance

  • Develop informatics capabilities within evolving elements of the healthcare system


  • Participates in nursing informatics professional organizations

  • Participates in appropriate teams focused on community clinical connectivity as needed to interface with hospital clinical systems
